Heading for new heights!
Our lab hasn't stopped growing since we started, and we may have reached our capacity 😅.
With the last incorporations, our lab is now a community that includes one postdoctoral associate, three graduate students, one master's student, one undergrad, and one research trainee! We are full steam ahead and already looking forward to the new year of exciting science and learning.

Our lab received the 2024 American Cancer Society IRG Award!
These funds will be used to investigate a rare, potentially lethal form of leukemia that disproportionately affects children with Down syndrome: DS-related acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (DS-AMKL). Children with Down syndrome are up to five times more likely to develop AMKL. Dr. Rivas and his team will build a first-ever experimental model that recapitulates all of DS-AMKL’s genetic abnormalities to prevent and treat the condition. The knowledge could also be extended to similar forms of cancer.

Our lab received a generous donation from the Castaways against Cancer!
Our lab keeps growing!
Early this month, we incorporated two more members! Betty joined the lab as a Ph.D. student and Gareth as an undergrad!
Betty completed her Master's degree a few months ago in Alexandria, Egypt, and since moving here has hit the floor running experiments! Gareth is an undergrad at UM pursuing studies in Biochemistry and Marine Sciences. Together, they are focusing on the role of chromosomal architecture in metastatic dissemination of breast cancer.

Our lab receives the 2023 Arima Genomics Cancer Research Grant!
Arima Genomics has been a game changer in the study of the 3D genome. They have revolutionized the field by offering the first commercial Hi-C kits, streamlining and simplifying the protocols, and they have partnered with researchers around the globe to expand knowledge in this field.
We are thrilled that our lab has been selected among many innovative candidates to receive the 2023 Arima Genomics Cancer Research Grant, which will help us fund the initial stages of our project investigating the role of chromosomal architecture during metastatic dissemination.
We are very grateful to Arima Genomics for the Grant and look forward to many discoveries to come!

New lab milestone: our lab is up and running (PCRs!). Since last week, the lab has had cell lines in culture and is already running genotyping PCRs (for mice born in our facilities!).
Thanks to Mabel, Dio and Mika for the hard work and the enthusiasm!
